Partners of the America's Farmer-to-Farmer initiative aims to provide technical assistance to agricultural producers and organizations within Latin America and the Caribbean to adapt and to mitigate climate change. The organization requested FAVACA's assistance to identify an expert with experience in marketing and management of agricultural organizations to assess the technical needs of the Dominican Republic’s banana industry.
The Banana Industry Strategic Planning project aims to enhance agricultural management in the Dominican Republic’s Yaque del Norte river basin, in order to mitigate the effects of global climate change on local agriculture. With more than twenty years of experience in agricultural marketing research, University of Georgia Associate Professor Esenduge Fonsah traveled between August 4 and 14, 2014 to streamline standard operating procedures, management, and packaging operations. Professor Fonsah assessed the efficiency of the banana industry’s management systems and trained 116 individuals within the industry. His recommendations and his report will set the foundation for future development of specific projects within the Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer assignments over the next five years.
The Farmer-to-Farmer initiative is funded by the United States Agency of International Development. The result of this project is due to the collaboration of this grant and Partners of the Americas.
